Pobanz's Guitar Rig
Hey guys. I just wanted to do a
little post describing some of the details I skipped over during my video post.
First off I would like to say that I am not a gear snob in the slightest
(within reason). I have had the basic components of my rig since I was fourteen
years old. But I digress… What I am trying to say is that my guitar rig
reflects upon who I am and represents me as an artist. One forth of my current
rig is loaned. My current signal flow is as follows.
·
Fender
American Deluxe Stratocaster >
·
Marshall
Avt20>
·
DI
into Fender Bassman 100.
·
External
Loud Speaker out into Heartkey 410 Bass Module.
This
is my current rig that is not connected to my EFX rig. I have a number of
effect pedals that I plan to experiment with, but for now this is my main guitar
rig.
Again
as I have said I have had most of this equipment since I was around fourteen
years old. My Fender Strat, my Solid State Marshall, and My Fender Bassman have
pretty much been my best friends since early adolescence.
The
Heartkey Bass Module, although a new addition to the family is a welcome one,
the unit itself is on loan from my good friend Kevin Cebulski, and I have to
admit based on the overall sound of my rig, this guy isn’t ever getting his
bass cab back. During which time I will channel my inner Josh Homme and run my
guitar rig through a bunch of bass amps.

Hello
there dear reader! Had a pretty eventful day today (during which no homework
got done, sorry Regina!). Went and recorded the up-and-coming emo-punk band today at the Music
Garage (which I highly recommend for any and all rehearsal/recording needs). Today
we were tasked with tracking three songs for a live sound recording for a
client ;) we had a limited number of microphones. Here’s an idea of what we had
on hand….
Microphones:
·
Random
Audio Technica Dynamic Microphones. Note* I literally don’t know what model
each microphone was, we were given a random assortment of random audio technica
dynamic mics. To free up your mind just consider these akin to shitty sm57’s
and 58’s. These mics were basically rode hard and put away wet.
·
1x
SM57.
·
1x
SM98
·
1x
C414
·
1x
Blue Blue Bird.
Another
factor for today was what we had to deal with space and interface wise. Although we were in an acoustically altered
room (It was not completely treated by any means, but it didn’t sound horrible
in the slightest.), we had the above mentioned microphone selection, an old
Mackie 12 channel mixer, and a 10x10 PreSonus firewire interface.
So needless to say we were
pretty limited to what the guys and me are used to. But! At the very least, I
feel like we were able to work through the hurdles and make things work

Motivation (such an aggravation) anyone get the reference?
Well
dear reader…. I’m not feeling it this weekend. Unmotivated, uninspired, and did
I mention unmotivated? So I present you with the question. What gets you guys
riled up and ready to sit down in front of a mix for hours on end? I know this
blog is technically about Tech, Tips, and Tricks… But the motivation to utilize
the tools is every bit as important as any $75,000 piece of gear. I guess my
real question is how do you make the motivation carry over in to the project?
Do you use reference tracks and undergo a constant A/B process or do you just
take the sound in your head, sit down, and grind it out? I ask this question
because the times in which I am at my peak of creativity and motivation, its
always sourced from just a random spur of the moment impulse to sit down and
start inching faders. Also, what do you do when your unfortunate/fortunate
enough to not have anything to work on? As a struggling student/engineer, I can
only get artists to work so much and at some points you experience lulls in
productivity, and I know you guys are probably at home saying “Just get more
clients man…” or “Perfect mixes you’ve already worked on…” Well… first of all,
you magically acquire more clients and get back to me and second… There is only
so much perfecting you can do to a mix before you just start to run around in
circles. So you tell me dear reader… How do I get my ass back in gear?
