Hello there dear reader! Had a pretty eventful day today (during which no homework got done, sorry Regina!). Went and recorded the  up-and-coming emo-punk band today at the Music Garage (which I highly recommend for any and all rehearsal/recording needs). Today we were tasked with tracking three songs for a live sound recording for a client ;) we had a limited number of microphones. Here’s an idea of what we had on hand….

Microphones:

·      Random Audio Technica Dynamic Microphones. Note* I literally don’t know what model each microphone was, we were given a random assortment of random audio technica dynamic mics. To free up your mind just consider these akin to shitty sm57’s and 58’s. These mics were basically rode hard and put away wet.
·      1x SM57.
·      1x SM98
·      1x C414
·      1x Blue Blue Bird.
Another factor for today was what we had to deal with space and interface wise.  Although we were in an acoustically altered room (It was not completely treated by any means, but it didn’t sound horrible in the slightest.), we had the above mentioned microphone selection, an old Mackie 12 channel mixer, and a 10x10 PreSonus firewire interface.
So needless to say we were pretty limited to what the guys and me are used to. But! At the very least, I feel like we were able to work through the hurdles and make things work

  1. Hey Phil! I'm glad you got some recording done, hopefully you guys got a good live sound recording project done out of it. I would like to see a follow up post on this subject to see how you addressed these limitations. What special miking techniques did you use since you had a limited selection. How did you address any sort of acoustic setbacks that the room brought on. How many performers were you miking at once? Did you like the space that you guys recorded this in and would recommend it? Was it free to use or did you guys have to pay a fee to use the space? Great post, would like to see some of this expanded in future posts.

    Thanks!
    Ryan

  2. Hey Phil, next time get some pics of your set up. The use of the C414 mic and how you set it up sounds interesting.
